Program management is an art — the best PMs are likened to motion picture directors. This session is targeted at both program and product managers who have spent at least 5 years in their jobs. Without time on the job, it is hard to appreciate the nuances of the difficulties of this discipline; especially the key challenge of having no authority; but all the responsibility. There are a number of core skills that we expect program managers to have in order to excel at their discipline — user empathy, design skills, informal and formal communication skills, project management, competitive analysis, people management, self-awareness, ability to manage other disciplines and so on. But the skills we will focus on in this session (given the target audience) are conflict management, becoming an expert, getting the best out of people, managing non-program managers, communicating upwards, power and authority, politicking positively and managing yourself.
